Concealed Carry Law Info for Your State

I’ve had many casual conversations with people about concealed carry laws, and one thing that I keep noticing over and over again is that there is quite a bit of confusion out there about what the laws actually say. I’ve heard many concealed carry permit holders, who are supposed to know the laws that govern their CCW permit, speak some pretty ridiculous and just plain silly things regarding what they “think” the law says.

Just as an example, I actually had someone tell me that it is illegal to carry a gun in a church or a hospital, which is completely false. In reality, the laws in my state (Iowa) make absolutely no mention of any such restrictions. I’m not sure how these myths get started, but nonetheless, they are surely out there.

If you have a permit to carry, it is critically important that you know the laws in your state. I really can’t stress this enough. Knowing the laws in your state is more for your protection than anything else. If you get caught carrying where you’re not supposed to, you can have your permit revoked and possibly face criminal charges depending on the situation. As we all know, ignorance of the law is not a valid excuse, and it is the responsibility of the CCW permit holder to know and follow the laws in your state, or any state you may be traveling to.

So, with all the myths about gun laws floating around out there, and with every state having different gun laws, where is the best place to find accurate information? Fortunately, such a source exists. It is a website called Handgunlaw.us

Here is a screenshot of the home page.

As you can see, front and center there is a map of the good old USA. All you have to do is click on your state to find gun law information that is specific for your state. One other very important thing to notice on the home page is at the very top where it says “Last Update”. Since laws do change from time to time, the people that run this site are constantly keeping the site updated as the laws change. This way you know that the information you find on the site will be current and up to date with the most recent gun laws.

When you click on your state, a PDF document will open up containing everything there is to know about handgun laws in your state, including links to the actual statutes that are on the books in your state. One of the things that I really like is the “Reciprocity Map” on the top of each state page. The reciprocity map is an easy to read, color coded map that will tell you what other states will honor your CCW permit. This is especially helpful for traveling or going on vacation. When planning a trip you can easily and quickly find out if your CCW permit is honored in the states you’ll be traveling to.

The features that I’ve mentioned are really just the tip of the ice berg. There is a TON of other very useful and interesting information to explore. So, do yourself a favor and check out Handgunlaw.us, print out a copy of the laws for your state, and learn them backwards and forwards. Then the next time you hear someone perpetuating another gun law myth you can tell them what’s what.

Have a good one,

T
