MKA-1919 Shotgun Review – Not your father’s shotgun

MKA-1919 Shotgun Review

I just got the new Cheaper Than Dirt catalog in the mail today and noticed the MKA-1919 shotgun was featured on the cover. To be honest, when I first saw this I thought it was a misprint, and that they accidentally printed a picture of a M16, but nope, it’s a shotgun. Have a look at the picture below, which is the MKA-1919 shotgun shown beside a standard M16 rifle. The shotgun is the one on top.

I had never seen this particular shotgun before. I know there are other shotguns out there that are similar to this one, like the Saiga shotgun, but for some reason this one really caught my eye. Aside from the  way it looks, the price is also nice. Cheaper Than Dirt has this thing on sale for only $579, compared to the regular price of $699.

After doing a little research, here are some things I’ve learned about this sweet little shotgun.

  • The MKA-1919 is a semi-automatic 12 gauge shotgun produced by Ucylidiz Arms AS, located in Istanbul, Turkey, and they have been producing this gun since 2007. It is currently being used by the Turkish military and police for use along with their M16A4 and M4 rifles. This means the shotgun has already been fully field tested with the new-design kinks and problems worked out over the last five years.
  • The MKA-1919 not only resembles the M16 rifle, but the control and function are similar. The bolt release, magazine release and manual safety are all shaped and located in AR fashion. Unlike any other 12-gauge shotgun, it is very light, ergonomic and magazine fed.
  • The MKA-1919 can chamber and fire factory 2 3/4-inch or 3-inch shotshells loaded with birdshot, buckshot or slugs. Ammunition is stored in five-shot steel magazines that hold the bolt open after the last round is fired. The shotgun comes with one magazine for 2 3/4-inch shells and a second for 3-inch shells. 10 round mags are also available.
  • Has a 19.7-inch chrome-lined barrel is threaded for removable chokes, and a cylinder bore, modified and full choke tube set are provided with a choke case and wrench.
  • The factory sights are polymer, with an AR-style fixed front sight and a polymer carry handle with a built-in height-adjustable flip sight. The upper receiver is made of aluminum alloy and sports a Picatinny sight rail. Both the front and rear sights can be easily removed in order to install your own optics.
  • The MKA-1919 weighs in at just 6.5 pounds (empty), and has an overall length of 40.5 inches. The barrel length is 19.7 inches.

One of the things that I really like about this shotgun is that is can be easily modified or converted, similar to an AR-15 style rifle. You can put your own custom stock, pistol grip, and muzzle devices. Here is a picture of a “converted” MKA1919 loaded with 10 round magazine.

Tony Rumore of Tromix test fired the MKA-1919 when it was first introduced to the U.S. market in 2011. Tony’s comments were,

“The thing runs great. There is a LOT of potential with this gun. Some things need work, but it needs a shit load less than a Saiga out of the box……This gun is going to eventually be something big.”

I’ve been saving my money all summer for a new “fun gun” without really having a particular gun in mind. Well, I think I may have found my next fun gun purchase. Oh yeah, it is also available in a camo version if the straight black is a little too plain for your tastes.

Have a good one,

T
